Do I need to know how to ride before I take a Scooter course?

You don't need to know how to ride a motorized bike, but you should at least be proficient on a bicycle before attempting to ride a scooter.

What are the requirements to take the course?

You must be able to demonstrate the ability to maintain balance on a two-wheeled vehicle.

You must meet the minimum licencing requirements to ride a scooter.

What is Q-RIDE?

Q-Ride is a competency-based training and assessment program that aims to ensure participants reach a demonstrated level of skill and proficiency as a rider.


The QRIDE program is available in Queensland (QLD), Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and other parts of Australia. The Qride course focuses on improving the quality of pre-licence rider training, with the aim to educate and create awareness, and enhance road safety.

What sort of licence do I need to ride a scooter?

In Queensland you can ride a scooter up to 50cc that can do no more than 50km/h on a Car licence , anything over 50cc will require to have a Motorcycle licence.

Is it difficult to get a Scooter licence?

In September 2001, the Queensland Government introduced a new initative called Q-Ride. In short, Q-Ride is a competency based training course of between 4 and 6 hours (depending upon your current level of 2 wheel experience), which is designed to equip you with the basic skills and knowledge to operate a motorcycle/scooter on the road.

Once you have successfully completed the course you will be awarded a certificate which you can then redeem at any Queesland Transport Customer Service Centre for your licence. The level of licence you are able to attain is dependent upon your age and the length of time you have held your Car licence, a Motorcycle Learners Permit is the only pre-requisite for the Q-Ride course.
